MUSEUMS

bulletElizabethtown Museum—open daily from Memorial Weekend to Labor Day, 10am to 5pm. Located 5.5 miles North of Eagle Nest on Highway 38 and 13 miles South of Red River. Sign located on a windmill on east side of highway.
bulletOld Mill—Open Memorial Day to Labor Day, closed Thursdays; Open Weekends in May and September. Small admission fee.
bulletVilla Philmonte—Open June through late August daily with tours on hour and half hour. Seasonal hours the rest of the year. Closed August 21, 2003 for renovations at least 2 months. Reservations through Philmont Museum. Suggested $4.00 donation. (575) 376-2281

ES BARKER WILDLIFE AREA

bulletTake highway 204 (unpaved) 14.6 miles through private property into the wildlife area. Road conditions are rough and involve stream crossings. Primitive camping is allowed along the road below the second river crossing. Fishing, hiking, and horseback riding allowed. (575) 445-2311

MAXWELL WILDLIFE REFUGE

bulletInterstate 25 to Maxwell, then north on 445 to 505. Or take Highway 64 to State Road 505 (located off of rough, unpaved roads). Most activity in winter. Sport fishing allowed in season on Lakes 13 and 14. Boating allowed on Lake 13 during season. Camping for 3 day limit on seasonal basis. (575) 375-2331

SPRINGER LAKE (State Wildlife Area)

bulletJust north of the town of Springer. Fishing, boat ramp, campsites, picnic tables, and toilets. (575) 445-2311

TAOS HOT SPRINGS

bulletManby Hot Springs—head north on Highway 64 out of Taos toward the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. About .3 miles after the airport, turn north on TUNE Road and continue to parking area. Follow path to springs.
bulletBlack Rock Hot Springs—herd north from Taos on Highway 522. Turn left onto a dirt road near Arroyo Hondo near traffic sigh reading "Hill". Follow dirt road down to Rio Grande and cross the river. Head south to the first parking area. Hike downstream on rocks to springs.

GHOST TOWNS

bulletDawson—only cemetery is open to the public; Follow the small sign just after the railroad tracks heading north on Highway 64 about 12 miles east of Cimarron near the Colfax Tavern.
bulletColfax—ruins along Highway 64 about 12 miles east of Cimarron right before the railroad tracks
bulletPonil Park—In the Valle Vidal (Carson National Forest). Park at the Whiteman Vega parking area—first one in the park and head south along the old road. Some ruins of cabins remain and parts of lumber mill.
